The Sacred Departed tour
Halloween goes beyond the spooky and mysterious to the spiritual and the sacred.
Halloween evokes scary and mysterious sentiments in the United States. But, in other cultures, the holiday has sacred connotations. Halloween goes beyond the spooky and mysterious to the spiritual and the sacred on this tour developed with folklorist Elena Martinez of City Lore.
This twilight tour will explore multiple perspectives of the Halloween season. Anticipated visits include: the Belmont mausoleum, where Alva Vanderbilt Belmont rests, along with a discussion of the family's Spiritualist beliefs; the Woolworth family mausoleum, inspired by the Egyptian Necropolis, or "City of the Dead." Actors and poets channel the spirits of those now departed for an outdoor tour-meets-theatre experience.
Meet at the Jerome Avenue entrance. 7:00PM. $15 for adults; discounts for Conservancy Members, seniors and students.
